SMITH Surviving are daughters Car- Bar owner provides bus to ensure patrons safe ride home Associated Press WALDO A bar owner in this rural central Ohio community says a bus service he provides to patrons is a combination of publie service and good business. "We didn't want to see any of our friends die in a crash or get thrown in jail for driving drunk," Bob Ingle said.

"If someone is willing to come in here and spend their money with us, the least we could do is make sure they get home safely." His program even has the blessing of Mothers Against Drunk Driving. "It's brilliant," said Judy Mead, executive director of MADD's Ohio office. "If we can get drunk drivers off the roads in Waldo, Ohio, then we can move on to the next community. It's the most clever designated driver program I've heard of." The converted 13-passenger school bus known as Ingle's Trolley travels an estimated 100 miles from 6 p.m. to 2:30 a.m.

or later each Friday and Saturday. It takes people to their homes from Ingle's two bars in Waldo and nearby Prospect for a $5 fee. As many as 30 people a night have used it. It's decorated on the outside with running lights and a bar logo, and inside it includes sickness bags for riders whose refreshments don't settle well. Ingle said he bought the bus because it's hard to make a living as a bar owner, and it may get harder if a proposed lower blood-alcohol limit for drivers takes effect.

The current limit is 0.10 percent a new limit of 0.08 has been proposed. Cab or bus rides have long been an option for impaired drivers in cities, but it's harder to find such transportation in rural areas, where poorly lighted roads and less signage contribute to a high crash rate. This year, 707 people have been killed in crashes on Ohio's rural roads; 198 of those deaths were alcohol-related.
