Wendelin Church. Sandusky County Personnel Association heard Manager Robert Huntzinger of the local office of Columbia Gas Company of Ohio at its meeting Monday at Hotel Fremont. Manager Huntzinger in his talk on "The Energy Problem, Its Effect on Local Business and Industry," said that until 1956 more gas was discovered each year than was being used. Now the trend is reversed. Drilling costs have increased for many reasons, and investors will not participate in this risky operation unless there is a reasonable assurance of a return on their investment.

Until higher prices are allowed at the wellhead for new interstate gas this trend will continue and supplies to interstate companies will continue to shrink. "In the meantime, until alternate sources of gas become available," Huntzinger told the association's 22 members and guests, "Alaskan gas, liquefied natural gas from overseas, and gas from coal curtailment will of necessity continue." He told them that it should be noted that the alternative sources are much more costly than deregulated continental gas production would be. According to the speaker the 1954 Supreme Court decision ordering the Federal Power Commission to regulate the price of gas at the wellhead is past history. Last year, 20 years later, we ran short of gas for industry. In 1954, gas exploration and production for the interstate market was at high levels.

This continued for two years and then reaction set in. Between 1950 and 1970 less drilling was done. There were 16,000 independent drillers 1n 1956 but only 4,000 in 1970. About 16,000 exploratory wells were drilled annually at peak production. In 1970 there were only 7,000.

He concluded by saying, "Conservation efforts have been very helpful, however, this will not solve the entire supply problem. The long term solution advocated by our Industry is deregulation of the wellhead price of new gas." Michael Fiorentino, president, presided. Jerry Krueger, vice president, announced the next meeting on Oct. 6, at Whirlpool Corporation, Clyde. Ray Rogers will be host for a tour of the plant.
