EQUIPMENT TIME Football practice officially opened for all of the area's high schools today. Yesterday, the Fremont Ross players were issued equipment even though they aren't the proceedings. "This is the year of the Bronco." Grignon already has set a Western Michigan career total offense mark of 2,306 yards. Ohio, 4-5 overall, will lean heavily on a rushing attack centered around record setting junior tailback Bill Gary.

He rushed for an unprecedented 1,064 yards for the Bobcats last fall. The Miami Redskins, 7-3 in 1970, will be a solid defensive team led by tri-captains Dick Dougherty, Doug Krause and Marc Smith. The hopes of Bowling Green, 2-6-1 last year, lie with sophomore tailback Paul Miles, who picked 7.2 yards per rush on the unbeaten 1970 freshmen. Kent State also has a new coach, Don James. The Golden Flashes, 3-7 last year, lack proven regulars to be a serious challenger.

Kent has two erstwhile trackmen, NCAA record breaking hammer thrower Al Schoterman and 9.5 dashman Len Turner, trying football. Schoterman is a defensive tackle candidate and Turner a split end. The conference will remain a six-member football league until 1975 when new additions Central Michigan and Eastern Michigan enter the race. COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) Visions of another warm December danced through Jack Murphy's head Tuesday when his Toledo Rockets were installed as Mid-American Conference football title favorites. "Orlando, sure is a nice place to be in December when it's cold in Toledo," said Murphy, starting his first season as the Rockets' head coach.

Murphy was thinking about the Tangerine Bowl site. He was there two years ago with Toledo as an assistant coach before guiding Heidelberg, Ohio, College to a 3-6 mark in 1970. The Rockets, odds-on choice in sports writers, broadcasters and coaches' polls at league meetings Tuesday, have the nation's longest major college streak of 23 games. "I never heard of a new coach who took over a team with a 23-0 record. It'skinda awesome," said Murphy, replacing Frank Lauterbur who now coaches at Iowa.

The return of 26 lettermen and 15 regulars convinced the writers, radiomen and coaches Toledo will grab a third straight Mid-American title. It's never been accomplished in 25 conference seasons. Five of the six coaches gave Toledo first place votes and the other mentor selected Western Michigan. In the media poll, the Rockets bagged 24 Mi votes, Western Michigan 5 and Ohio University 2Vfe. Murphy cited a third straight national total defensive title, never accomplished in the NCAA's 103 years and third successive league and Tangerine Bowl crowns as incentives for his veterans.

Chuck Ealey, a Portsmouth, Ohio senior who has played in 53 straight high school and college wins, is back as Toledo quarterback. He is trying to be the conference player of the year for a third straight season. "Ealey's the difference between Toledo and the rest of us. He gives them a different dimension," said Ohio's Bill Hess, the dean of conference coaches in his 14th season. The 6-foot, 185-pound Ealey finished in the nation's top 20 in six departments last year.

Western Michigan, 7-3 to Toledo's 11-0 in regular season play, has the only other quarterback starter returning, little senior Ted Grignon. This is a main reason Bronco mentor Bill Doolittle thinks Western Michigan has a chance of unseating the Rockets. Alou's hit was his seventh in 13 pinch hitting appearances this season. He has driven in seven runs as a pinch batter. Jim Spencer drove in three runs with a bases-loaded double as California scored four times in the first inning against Boston.

Then Andy Messersmith survived homers by Rico Petro-celli and Duane Josephson to pitch the Angels past the Red Sox. Ellie Hendricks cracked a leadoff homer in the ninth inning, giving the Orioles their victory over Milwaukee. The Brewers led 2-0 into the eighth but Paul Blair beat out a two-out bunt for a single and then Boog Powell tied the game with a 425-foot homer his 17th of the year. Nixon Tuesday afternoon and a few hours later adopted a freeze on run-making that gave the cold shoulder to their shot at a 59-year-old American League record. The A's, who had won 12 straight road games, four short of the AL mark set by Washington in 1912, managed just one run against rookie Bill Gogolewski, who pitched the Senators to an 8-1 victory over the West Division's runaway leaders Tuesday night. So Oakland had to be content with a mere half-game pickup on second place Kansas City which dropped a doubleheader at New York, 2-0 and 8-5. Elsewhere in the AL Tuesday, California trimmed Boston 4-3, Chicago swept a doubleheader with Detroit, winning the opener 6-5 and taking the nightcap 4-1, Cleveland nipped Minnesota 3-2, and Baltimore edged Milwaukee 3-2. The A's spent a friendly afternoon talking baseball with the president and a not so pleasant evening playing it against the Senators.

Don Min-cher drove in four Washington runs with a homer and a single and Frank Howard cracked his 21st homer of the season, leading the romp over Oakland. Gogolewski scattered eight hits and contributed three hits for Washington as the Senators shelled Blue Moon Odom. It was Oakland's first loss to Washington since Opening Day, April 5, when the Senators beat Vida Blue. That was, of course, the Presidential Opener. Despite their problems with the Senators, the A's gained ground as the Yankees whipped Kansas City twice.

Left-hander Fritz Peterson fired a five-hitter in the first game, winning his 13th in 20 decisions with singles by Danny Cater and Thurman Munson driving in New York's runs. In the second game, the Yankees exploded for five runs in the seventh inning on homers by Felipe Alou and Bobby Mur-cer to erase a 4-1 Royals' lead. Alou tagged a two-run homer pinch hitting for winning pitcher Mike Kekich and then after Gene Michael singled and Munson walked, Murcer unloaded twice by pitche-the second triggering a free-for-all as the Expos pounded out an 11-0 sion over the San Diego Padres Tuesday night. Bench, the National League's most valuable player, home run leader and runs batted in champion in 1970, quieted the boo-birds at Cincinnati's Riverfront Stadium, slugging a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning, giving the Reds a 5-3 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals.

Elsewhere in the National League Tuesday, Houston defeated Pittsburgh 6-5; Atlanta edged Chicago 5-4; San Francisco downed Philadelphia 5-1, and Los Angeles blanked New York 4-0. Hunt recently broke the modern major league record for getting hit by the pitch the most times in one season, eclipsing the mark of 31 set by Louis Evans of St. Louis in 1910. Against the Padres, he was hit for the 33rd time this season by a pitch from loser Steve Ar-lin in the third inning. Hunt was nicked by another Arlin delivery in the fifth inning and that's when he began retaliating.

St. Joe Gives Coach Release Rev. Fr. James K. Say, administrator of Fremont St.

Joseph high school, announced today that assistant basketball coach Al Barracco has been released from his 1971-72 contract. Barracco, who joined the Crimson Streak faculty last year after graduating from Malone College, has taken a post as head track and cross country coach at Walsh College. He also hopes to continue studies toward a master's degree. Fr. Say said applications are now being taken for the teaching and coaching vacancy created by Barracco' release.

A teacher is needed in the general science and physical education area. A coach with some experience in bookkeeping will be considered, however. The latest championship came last night when Grace rolled to a come-from-behind 10-5 victory over St. John's at Rodger Young Park in the title game. In the battle for third place, Lindsey took a 4-1 verdict from Memorial. Grace, which captured the Division One title with a 10-3 mark, scored single runs in the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead.

St. John's cut the margin to 2-1 in the second and went ahead 5-2 in the fourth. Grace, however, plated eight runs in the fifth. Winning pitcher Joe Krotzer limited St. John's to only three hits.

He issued six walks and struck out four. The loser was Jerry Bower, who gave up seven hits, walked six and fanned 11. Steve Lindsay collected three hits in four trips to the plate for Lindsay. The only extra base hit was a double by Roger Otermat. Lindsey gave its pitcher, Jack Weaver, three runs in the top of the first inning.

Dave Rodd accounted for the runs with a home run that also scored Steve Kromer and Bill Fausey. ders, repack outer front bearings, inspect complete system.
