REPORTERS A CONVICT AFTER OMAHA MANHUNT Radio Announcer Al Captures Escaped Prisoner OMAHA, Dec. 27. George Sedlacek and Ernie Jones, Omaha World Herald reporter who stayed in a farm house after officers left, and Foster May, Omaha radio station (WOW) announcer wanted to get warm, captured two escaped prisoners last night. The reporters captured Marion Brown, 34, who escaped from the Missouri state prison while serving a term for bank robbery "and was captured and sentenced for robbery here, and May captured Fred J. Roberts, 34, former Nebraska prison inmate who was being held in connection with an Omaha robbery.

May was at the scene of a nan-hunt being staged by more than 100 officers and farmers when he stepped up to a scale house on the George Cockerill farm. A fire burned brightly in a stove and a man lay on a couch. May asked if he might enter and get warm. Shot In Leg He looked questioningly at the man and the latter said "I'm Roberts." Roberts was shot In the leg, the wound apparently having been inflicted during a chase of a stolen car that preceded the gathering of the posse. Sedlacek and Jones were at the Cockerill home when officers left to return to the scale house.

The reporters heard a knock at a window, then a bloody face peering in and a voice saying "Please let me in. I want to get warm." They ran outside and seized the man. It was Brown. and children Marjorle, Kathleen and Doorthy of Coldwater, were the Christmas week-end guests of their son and brother, Eugene J. Selhorst of Croghan street.

Frank G. Karbler, 1818 west State street, which is just outside the city li in its, Safety-Service Director C. A. Hochenedel clarified the city's position In the matter later In the day. The city Is prevented from sending apparatus outside the corporation lines due to a ruling of the state Bureau of Inspection, Mr.

Hochenedel said. This ruling sets forth that in such instances if a fireman is injured it jeopardizes his pension standing and might result in the city, itself, being held liable. Similarly, if the apparatus Is damaged, the city official who ordered the department to make the run can be held liable for all such damages. He is also liable if, while the fire equipment Is out of the city, a fire breaks out In the city and a building Is destroyed through lack of all available equipment. Powerless to Act In regard to the fire here, Mr.

Hochenedel and firemen as well, for November Report of approval of $4,793.97 in relief bills by C. C. Davis, state examiner from office of Auditor Joseph T. Ferguson, was made Tuesday to Sandusky county commissioners. The report included $4,016.40 in November relief costs, $721.67 in October costs and $55.88 in bills prior to October.

Sandusky county's share of costs were $416.30 for November, while the WPA sewing and book binding projects cost $774.36 for the same month. Examiner's costs were $110.14. Fremont's total expense was Mr. and Mrs. C.

BUFFALO, N. Dec. 27. John Simmons, 21, of Buffalo, was sentenced today to serve two years in a federal penitentiary at Chilll-cothe, on a charge of transporting across state lines an automobile used in kidnaping a woman novelist. Simmons, arrested recently in Grand Forks, N.

pleaded guilty last week before Federal Judge John Knight here. Simmons was one of two men arrested in connection with the kidnaping of Mrs. Louise Rose Eppley, 38, of Middlefleld, O. She charged that they attacked her after accepting a ride in her automobile near Fremont, O. Assistant Federal District Attorney Robert M.

All employers are subject to the law where three or more persons are employed except those involving such occupations as farming, domestic service, shipping as seaman or officers, teaching, research, religious or charitable work, government service of any type, and commission salesmen who command their own time.

Needs Appointment An eligible applicant for compensation should apply at the local office for an appointment The applicant should have prepayment office and carry his iden-viously registered at a state em-tification card, as well as his Social Security card. He should give the place of his last job and the reason for leaving. If the job was left after October 1, he must have a separation slip from his last employer. If he obtains an appointment and his claim later is allowed, the waiting period begins January 1. The waiting period for those who lost their jobs through no fault of their own is three weeks.

For those who quit or were discharged for cause, the waiting period is six weeks. Procedure Given For those who were laid off, the first day the unemployed compensation begins is January 22. A week later, on or after January 29, the individual may come to the office and see if a job is available. If so, it must be taken. If not, a pay order is made out and sent to Columbus for checking.

The check will be mailed to the last known address of the applicant about a week or two later. Thus, the first checks to he distributed will probably arrive about the middle of February.
