2 Fremont News-Messenger Tuesday, Jan. 13, 1970 Fremont, Area Deaths Fremont Woman Found Dead In Elyria Motel A a Monday evening the same chambermaid went to the room, opened the door as far as she could, and saw the same woman fn the same position. It was then that police were called, Mrs. Edwards being found dead. No one had seen her leave her room after she registered.

Her car had not been moved. Mrs. Edwards, a graduate of Ross high school and a widely-acclaimed drum major there during her school years, was bom in Fremont December 25, 1930, daughter of Marcus and Beatrice Michles. Surviving in addition to the parents are two sons, Brian, 12, and Bruce Edwards, 10; a brother, Major Marcus Robert Michles in Bangkok, Thailand; two sisters, Mrs. Darwin (Carol) Portman, St.

Louis, and Mrs. David (Sharon) Forgatsch of Fremont. Mrs. Edwards had attended Ohio State university and Bowling Green State university. Funeral services will be Thursday at 2 p.m.

at the Keller and Son mortuary, Rabbi Kenneth Kudisch of Cincinnati to officiate. He serves Beth Israel Temple here. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery. Sr. Mary Carmelita Eiserlo Sister Mary Carmelita Eiserlo, R.S.M., 75, of Our Lady of the Pines Convent, died Monday at 11:50 p.m.

in Memorial hospital where she had been admitted earlier in the day. She had been in falling health several years and had been residing at the Pines. The native of Toledo, born September 12, 1895, was a member of St. Mary's church, Toledo, at the time of her entrance into the Novitiate of the Sisters of Mercy, September 8, 1921. She professed her vows April 11, 1924.

A registered nurse, Sister M. Carmelita Eiserlo, was graduated from St. Rita School of Nursing, Lima, in 1927. In 1935 she studied medical technology at Mercy hospital, Baltimore, Md. She served as laboratory technician at Toledo Mercy and Tiffin Mercy hospitals for many years.

Since 1954 until her recent illness, she had been in charge of the nursery at St. Charles hospital, Oregon. Surviving are brothers, Dan Schmidt, Toledo, and John Schmidt, Los Angeles, Calif. Friends may call at Our Lady of the Pines Tuesday and Wednesday. Funeral Mass of the Resurrection will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m.

(News-Messenger Photo) Chagrin Falls Woman Heads Education Board Edwin C. Van Tine Edwin C. Van Tine, 46, 1806 Oak Harbor road, died unexpectedly Monday at 11 a.m. at his home, Mr.

Van Tine, a make-up man for The Fremont News-Messenger, had resided in Fremont two years. He had remained home Monday to consult a physician because of Illness. Surviving are his wife, the former Eleanor Babcock, whom he married November 26, 1955 in Norwich, N.Y.; sons, Edwin Tonawanda, N.Y.; Terry, Fremont; Rick and Robert, both at home; daughters, Mrs. Gary (Lynette) Covell, Fremont, and Miss Deborah, Norwich, N.Y.; brother, Robert, Kearney, a sister, Mrs. John Moore, Norwich; his parents, Edwin and Hazel Stradling Van Tine, Norwich, and three grandchildren.

An aunt and uncle and three nieces reside in Utica. Mr. Van Tine was born August 22, 1923 in Utica, N.Y. He was a veteran of World War having served in the Air Force. He was a German war prisoner for a time.

Friends may call at the Weller-Wonderly funeral home beginning Wednesday at 4 p.m. The Rev. Ralph Metheny will conduct funeral services Thursday at 1 p.m. in the mortuary with burial in Oakwood cemetery. Dr.

Mark Kuffel Mrs. Stanley Slates of Elmore has received word that her uncle, Dr. Mark J. Kuffel, 62, 5331 Los Lomas, Long Beach, died unexpectedly Friday of a heart attack at Long Beach. Masonic memorial services will be held Wednesday in Long Beach.

Surviving are his wife, the former Agnes Bushnell, Woodville, and one brother, George, Long Beach. Robert B. Smoot Funeral services for Robert B. Smoot, 75, native of the Old Fort area, were held January 6 in Toledo. Mr.

Smoot was born June 27, 1894 in Pleasant township, son of Robert S. and Ella Smoot. He served in World War I. Following his marriage to Hester Jones of Bloomville on Ocober 4, 1921, he resided in Toledo. He was employed by the Kaiser-Jeep Corporation until he retired 10 years ago.

Surviving are his wife; a son, Robert Toledo; sisters, Mrs. Roy Miller and Mrs. John Flagg, both of Toledo; Mrs. Margaret Jumper, Tiffin; Mrs. Theodore Bish, Bloomville, and Mrs.

Chester Flumerfelt, Old Fort; a brother, Fred, Tiffin, and two grandchildren. Mrs. Helen McCay Mrs. Helen McCay, 53, Phoenix, former resident of Woodville, died Monday in General Hospital at Phoenix after a brief illness. Mrs.

McCay was the widow of Everett McCay. The native of Woodville was the daughter of August and Flossie Ottney Linkey. She left Woodville in 1942 to reside in Arizona. Surviving are a son, Mark, in the Army Air Force; her mother, also of Phoenix; brothers, August, Garth and Glenn Linkey, all of Phoenix, and David in Iowa. A sister, Mrs.

Rosalie Mortimer, is deceased. Funeral services and burial will be Wednesday in Phoenix. Dr. Alfred Buehler Dr. Alfred G.

Buehler, 69, Devon, husband of the former Marian Sheffer, Woodville, died Monday in Bryn Mawr hospital, Bryn Mawr, Pa. after an illness of two weeks. Dr. Buehler was professor of economics in Wharton School of Finance at the University of Pennsylvania and prior to that had taught at the University of Vermont. He had served as a tax consultant to Pennsylvania and had authored several books on economics.

Native of Swanton, Dr. Buehler was graduated from Scott high school, Toledo. He received his Bachelor of Science degree at Heidelberg, Tiffin and his Master's and Doctor degrees at Yale university, New Haven, Conn. Surviving with his wife are a son, Dr. Philip professor at Drexel Institutue, Philadelphia, and a daughter, Dr.

Gretchen who teaches at the University of Indiana. Dr. Buehler was a member of the Baptist church in Narberth, Pa. Memorial services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in Narberth.

Callihan Funeral The Rev. Hubert A. Boles conducted funeral services for Frank S. Callihan, 64, of Helena, Monday in the Veh and Son funeral home, Gibsonburg. Burial was in Oakwood Mausoleum, Fremont.

Mr. Callihan died unexpectedly Friday while shoveling snow. Pallbearers were Dale and Jeff Callihan, Paul and John Brecheisen, Paul and Steve Ruth. Mrs. Mary Jane Edwards, 39, of 111 south Clover street, was found dead Monday at 6:30 p.m.

in the Travelodge Motel, 855 Lorain Boulevard, Elyria. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marcus Mlchles, south Park avenue, had registered in the motel last Wednesday under the name of Mrs. J.

C. Laurence of Bowling Green. Her father had reported to Fremont police last Saturday that she was missing. Dr. Richard Thomas, deputy Lorain county coroner, is conducting an autopsy today to determine cause of death.

The coroner's office said some bottles which had contained pills were found in her room, and that a note had been found. Its contents were not disclosed. Dr. Thomas said shortly before noon Tuesday that his verdict in the death is suicide. Just how long Mrs.

Edwards had been dead has not been determined. A chambermaid tried to enter the room Saturday, Elyria police were told but opened the door only as far as the door chain would permit. She said she saw a woman lying on her side on a bed. Three Citations In Three accidents Monday and one early Tuesday brought three citations from the Fremont post of the State Highway Patrol. Tuesday at 2:20 a.m.

Robert Stull 32, of 900 Everett road, was cited for failure to yield. He was northbound on County road 128, west of Fremont, stopped for U.S. Route 20, then crossed into the medial strip. He saw a westbound car approaching, driven by Dennis Cockran, 26, of Toledo. Stull attempted to speed up.

Cockran skidded in an attempt to avoid the Fremont car but struck it. There was moderate damage to both vehicles. The Toledo man suffered complaint injuries but was not treated. Monday at 7:30 a.m. on U.S.

Route 23, south of Route 224 in Seneca county, Timothy Buch-man, 25, Bowling Green, driving a semi-trailer tractor, overtook a car driven by Lawrence Cole, 20, Carey, on 23. The trucker was unable to stop on the icy road and struck the car. Buchman was cited for an unassured clear distance. Court News MARRIAGE APPLICATIONS Thomas A. Pettiford 20, Army, and Margaret Williams, 18, factory worker, both of Fremont.

HOWELLS PETITION Patsy L. Howells, 1815 Moore street, has filed petition in common pleas court for divorce from John E. Howells. Married in 1960, they have two children. Charging neglect and cruelty, she asks custody of the children, support, alimony and division of property.

DAMAGE SUIT FILED St. Paul Fire and Marine Insurance, Toledo, and Hiram Wakeman, Bedford, have filed suit in common pleas court against Transcon Lines, Toledo, and Jerry A. Vermillion, Chester, W. Va. The suit involves an accident at the 91 milepost of the Ohio turnpike on January 12, 1968.

Involved are a tractor-trailer owned by Wakeman and insured by St. Paul, and a tractor-trailer owned by Transcon and driven by Vermilion. The insurane company seeks to recover $17,148 and Wakeman, $4,600. The plaintiffs charge negligence on the part of Vermilion in stopping the transcon trailer which was hit by the Wakeman vehicle. Field Service Unit Seeking Finances, Homes For Students Fremont chapter, American Field Service, directors met Monday at the home of Mrs.

Dan Connors, Barker road, reporting the chapter's financial drive began this week under the chairmanship of Mrs. Robert Maddox and Mrs. Tom Perry. A discussion was held on host families for 1970. This is in reference to a family interested in welcoming an exchange student into the home for the school year.

Anyone interested may contact Mrs. Harvey Oaks of Whittaker Drive. This year's exchange student, Veronica Frick of Chile, will begin her speaking engagements Wednesday at the Y's Men's club dinner at the YMCA. Brickman Charles W. Brickman, 61, 3755 Shannon road, died Monday at 8:15 p.m. in Memorial hospital where he had been a patient since October 30. Mr. Brickman was a metal worker, a die setter and pressman and had operated a business here for several years.

He later was associated as a partner in the Berlekamp Corporation, retiring a few years ago. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. I. T. (Betty Jane) Myers, Tiffin; three grandchildren, two greatgrandchildren, half-brothers, Don and Charles Cook, both of Fostoria; half-sisters, Mrs.

Ruth Rhinehart and Mrs. Blanche Cook, both of Fostoria. Mr. Brickman was born February 1, 1889 in McComb, son of Charles W. and Marabelle Montgomery Brickman, He married Ruth Metz October 13, 1906.

She died March 10, 1961. A grandchild is also deceased. Friends may call at the Weller-Wonderly funeral home beginning Wednesday at 4 The Rev. George Jensen will conduct funeral services Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in the mortuary with burial in Oakwood cemetery.

Mrs. Jennie Huston Mrs. Jennie Huston, 82, mother of George Huston, 6195 east Route 101, rural Clyde, died Monday at 2 p.m. in the Sandusky County Home. Mrs.

Huston had resided with her son for three years She had been a patient in the Sandusky County Home three months. Mrs. Huston was born March 18, 1887 in Tuscarawas county. Surviving are the son, George, and four grandchildren. The body has been transferred from the Mitchell-Auxter funeral home, Clyde, to the Ourant funeral home in Newcomerstown.

Funeral services will be held there Thursday at 1 p.m. with burial in Hartwood cemetery there. Mrs. Erwin Kapp TOLEDO Funeral services for Mrs. Florence A.

Kapp, 64, of 5127 Walbridge road, will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in Solomon Lutheran church, Woodville. Burial will be in Lake township cemetery. Mrs. Kapp, wife of Erwin Kapp, died Sunday in St.

Charles hospital, Oregon, after a short illness. Surviving with the husband are sons, Robert and Donald, both of Toledo; her mother, Mrs. Clara Schepman, Woodville; brothers, Waldron, Norman and Dale Schepman, all of Woodville, and Robert, Miami, Fla. There are seven grandchildren. Her father, John is deceased.

Mrs. Kapp retired 24 years ago after working five years as a secretary for the Toledo Trust Co. She was a member of Solomon Lutheran church, Woodville; Lake Township Grange and Great Western Farm Council. Friends may call at the Robinson mortuary, Genoa. The family suggests that memorials be contributions to the Lutheran Home of Mercy, Williston.

Gabel Services A Requiem Mass was offered Monday for Aloys C. Gabel, 90, County Road 198, Route 4, Fremont, in Sacred Heart church by Father B. J. Shenk. Burial was in St.

Joseph's cemetery with the Weller-Wonderly funeral home in charge. Mr. Gabel, retired farmer, died Thursday in Memorial hospital after being admitted earlier in the day. Pallbearers were Larry Corf-man and grandsons, Richard, Thomas and Jama Gabel. Educator Quitting HURON Ralph Brown, Huron county school superintendent for 21 years, has submitted his resignation.

He said that he wished to retire due to personal reasons ajvl asked for the effective date of January 31. dards as they were adopted. Enrollment stipulations would affect big city districts where, state education officials said, there is the greatest need for job training. It would also force smaller districts to combine in offering vocational training if' they are to receive the first call on state funding for vocational education buildings and equipment. Led by State School Supt.

Martin Essex, the board adopted the standards virtually as they were drafted by the Ohio Department of Education after a series of regional conferences with local superintendents last fall. The standards, which become effective Jan. 24, require: Each district or combination of districts to offer 12 different vocational courses with a total of 20 classes. Districts to submit plans for vocational education by April 1. The board also adopted amendments prohibiting racial discrimination in selection or eligibility of persons to education services and giving the board an escape hatch to institute exceptions to the standard.

Geer Discusses Academic Trends Future trends in three and four-year subjects and graduate credit subjects to be offered in the Fremont Academic Center were revealed Monday night at a meeting of the Advisory committee of the Academic Center by Dr. Ralph Geer, director of summer and off-campus programs for Bowling Green State university. Dr. Geer also discussed technical college credits in relation to the State Board of Education and the Board of Regents control. Comments of appreciation were offered by members to Dr.

Geer, who will retire from his present position July 1. He has been associated with the branch program in Fremont for 12 years. Gordon Hart, Fremont director, said in his annual 1969-70 fall quarter report that there was an enrollment of 304 students. There were 181 women and 123 men. Enrollment in college courses were: Education, 201; Liberal Arts, 53; Business Administration, 33, and 17 in others.

There were 145 Fremont students enrolled, 24 from Clyde and 22 from Tiffin. About 40 other cities and towns were represented. Five Ohio GIs On Death List WASHINGTON (AP) The names of five Ohioans were included on the latest casualty list from the Vietnam War. The list was released by the Defense Department Monday. The dead are: Army S.

Sgt. Gene G. Wells, Cincinnati; Army Pfc. Robert S. Sombati, Akron; Marine Lance Cpl.

Edward J. Justice, Cincinnati; Army Pfc. Terry E. Gorslene, Columbus; and Marine Pfc. Danny E.

Cheadle, St. Henry. Kenneth Cummings Lynn Street, Dead Kenneth Gimrnings, 405 Lynn street, was found dead at his home Tuesday at about 11 am Other details of the investigation wre not available immediately. Rural Wrecks A citation for failure to yield was issued to Dale Busdeker, 18, of 1336 west Madison street, Gibsonburg, at 4:30 p.m. Monday after a collision on State Route 600 at County road 32, west of Gibsonburg.

Busdeker traveling on the county road, stopped for a stop sign then pulled onto 600 striking car driven by Raymond Ohm, 48, Route 1, Gibsonburg. A one-car accident at 8:15 p.m. Monday involved William Wilt, 16, of Attica, on State Route 4 in Seneca county, north of Attica. He lost control of his car, went off the road and struck a reflector and post. He was uninjured and was not cited.

Five Violations Cost Motorist Charged by police with speeding at 80 miles an hour on west State Tuesday at 3 a.m. Michael A. Shilling, 20, 1705 Emmett Drive, was confined in city jail pending arraignment in municipal court. He was also charged with unsafe operation and three counts of traffic signal violations. In court later this morning Shilling was found guilty and was fined $50 on each count.

On the speeding charge he was sentenced to five days in city jail and was given a one year driving suspension. The youth is home from military service. Banking Classes Resume Tuesday Second semester classes for bank officers and employes of banks located in the five-county area of the North Central Ohio Chapter of the American Institute of Banking began Tuesday at Sandusky High School and Fremont Vanguard School. Other classes will be held at Tiffin University beginning January 22. This announcement was made today by George R.

Mayer, educational director of the chapter. The following three courses will be offered at Sandusky: Money and Banking, David Voight, Instructor; Accounting Richard Woodfall, Instructor, both of Clevite Harris Corp. of Milan; and Bank. Marketing and Public Relations, George R. Mayer, Cashier of The Erie County Bank, Instructor.

Classes offered at Fremont are: Bank Management, Carman C. Norwine, executive Vice president and Cashier, the Oak Harbor State Bank, instructor, and Accounting Richard Wood-fall, instructor. A course in Bank Marketing will be offered at Tiffin University. The American Institute of Banking is the Educational Branch of the American Bankers Association and provides advanced courses of study for bank employes throughout the United States. Two Under Arrest In Riley Burglary Two men wanted for the December 8 breaking and entering of the George Wyckoff residence on Route 6 in Riley township have been apprehended in Gainesville, according to information received today by Sheriff Daniel G.

Haas. Antique coins and other money were taken from the home. Sheriff Haas and Prosecutor Harry A. Sargeant Jr said today they are awaiting waiver of extradition before returning the men to Sandusky county. They are Gary Seward and Dean Eddings.

Breaking and entering warrants are on file. P.E. Weller P. E. Weller, 89, Fayette, father of Jerry E.

Weller, 1441 Tiffin road, died Monday evening in Morenci, hospital, after a short illness. Mr. Weller was a retired Standard Oil Co. bulk supervisor, having been active with the company 30 years. He received a 60-year pin from the company last fall.

Following his retirement he was an agent for Motorist Mutual Insurance until 1965. Mr. Weller was also a 50-year member of the Masonic order. He was a member of the United Methodist church at Fayette and he has served three terms on the church council. The native of Marysville, was born August 14, 1880, son of Edward and Lovina M.

Browning Weller. He married Sarah Alice Patrick October 9, 1901 in North Lewisburg. She died May 29, 1963. Surviving are the son, Jerry, Fremont; daughters, Mrs. Wayne (Helen) Mitchell, Fayette, and Mrs.

Rollin (Mildred) Beaverson, West Unity; a sister, Mrs. Myrtle Epps, Marysville, eight grandchildren and 11 greatgrandchildren. Two brothers and two sisters are deceased. Friends may call at the Eagle funeral home, Fayette, beginning Tuesday evening. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m.

in the mortuary with burial in Pleasant Union cemetery. It is suggested that memorials be made to the United Methodist church, Fayette, or the donor's favorite charity. Mrs. Harold Jeremy PORT CLINTON Funeral services for Mrs. LaVonne M.

Jeremy, 52, wife of Harold Jeremy, former mayor of Port Clinton, will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Sanders funeral home. The Rev. William Luoma will officiate with burial in Riverview cemetery. The residence is at 95 Seegard road.

Mrs. Jeremy died Sunday in Magruder hospital. She was the former LaVonne Smith, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. O.

J. Smith former residents of Prospect street, of Fremont. She was confirmed in St. Mark Lutheran church. Surviving are her husband; a son, Dennis Young, Niles, a sister, Mrs.

Glenn Meinzer, Sandusky, and one granddaughter. Sturgis and Carl Sheehan, both of Fremont, were reared in the Smith home and are foster brothers of Mrs. Jeremy. Mrs. Herman Miller MARBLEHEAD-Mrs.

Elsie Mary Miller, 83, wife of Herman Miller, 7686 east Bayshore road, died Monday afternoon in the Colvin Nursing Clyde. She had been a resident there for more than one year. Surviving with the husband, Herman, are two daughters, Mrs. John Kosa, Marblehead, and Mrs. Augustus Eberly, Lakeside, and one son, Randall, Port Clinton.

There are eight grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren. Mrs. Miller was a native of Danbury township, born January 4, 1886, daughter of Henry and Margaret Rahs Bredehoft. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran church and the Martha Circle, Women of the Church.

Friends may call at the Nei-decker-LeVeck funeral home, Port Clinton, beginning Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Rev. William C. Bowers will conduct funeral services Thursday at 2 p.m. in the mortuary with burial in St.

Paul's cemetery. Two Auto Two Court Orders Automobiles driven by George H. Fox, 44, 2250 west Birchard avenue, and Mrs. Mildred Inez Daugherty, 57, 1436 Dickinson street, collided Monday at 5:30 p.m. at west State and Justice streets. Fox was driving west on State, Mrs.

Daugherty going east and turning north on Justice. Both vehicles were damaged. Police cited Mrs. Daugherty for failure to yield right of way. Automobiled operated by James D.

Jeannette L. Wagner of Chagrin Falls, formerly vice president of the board, as president for a two-year term. She succeeds Edward C. Ames of Toledo. The board also adopted standards for vocational education after a public hearing which carried the board's session to near midnight Monday.

Comments from educators at the hearing generally carried disapproval of proposed standards which would give priority in state finding for Job training facilities to districts which have a minimum of 3,000 students in the 9th through 12th grades. Paul Briggs, superintedent of Cleveland city schools, urged the board not to raise standards to the point where "we have to have 3,000 or more students to have vocational education that's not necessary or desirable."
