Joseph high school head coach Bob Smith learned the short punt offense while a half back at DeSalles College in Toledo. The now nonexistent institute of learning played football in the Michigan-Ontario conference and was undefeated in its very first season of competition. Coach Smith came out of DeSalles with one major thought in mind "If you're going to coach, coach what you know best." So, Smith installed the short punt offense at St. Joseph's and the Streaks have been consistent winners ever since. Basically, the short punt set up provides more power for the attack, getting three backs in position to block for the fourth, and also causes confusion on the part of the defense.

"The defense cannot move until it knows where the ball is and it's hard to know where the ball is on our spinner series," explains Smith. The Streaks are not strictly a short punt team, as there are variations to the formation, but under the St.

Joe system, the quarterback is nearly always out from under the center. This is true even in the Streak's formation and the wing both of which have been employed to add to the variety of the attack. Much of the success of the spinner series has come off the wing set up. In all, the quarterback is not the only man available to get the direct snap from center and in all the quarterback is an important man as a blocker as well as a ball handler. Coach Smith feels that the system has a value beyond its own strengths.

Other coaches and teams have to make special preparations every time they face the Streaks, because they know that they will be facing something different than the normal Friday evening formation. The same is true of the St. Joseph defense which has stayed as a basic six man line, while other teams have jumped through the five-three and four-four and others.
